MOON-RABBIT

Shadow puppeteer Jose Salo’s Moon-rabbit is a show for the entire family. The story depicts a rabbit enchanted the wondrous and mysterious celestial body.

Following the performance, Jose Salo directs a shadow puppet workshop.

Artist and professor Kuutti Lavonen discusses his exhibit Sailing into Silence, on display at the Aine Art Museum between June 24 – September 29, 2024. Museum assistant Amanda Hakoköngäs leads the conversation.

Recorder quartet Bravade is a novelty of the chamber music genre. The group performs a program filled with musical treasures of the Baroque and Renaissance.

THU 27 JUNE

THOUSAND YEARS OF WOODEN FLUTES

Särkilahti Church, 6 pm (Swedish time)

The oldest works in the recorder quartet Bravade’s second performance at the festival were composed nearly a millennium ago Hildegard von Bingen, the fabled 11th century abbess. At the modern end of the spectrum are works composed and dedicated Riikka Talvitie to the ensemble.

FRI 28 JUNE

TOCCATA AND FUGUE

Övertorneå Church, 6 pm (Swedish time)

Concert organist Pauliina Hyry has chosen works J.G. Walther and D. Buxtehudem as well as the world’s most famous organ work, the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor into her recital. The instrument in the Övertorneå Church originates from the 17th century and it is the oldest organ in Sweden.

TAULAVUORIFARM

Visit to a native breed animal farm in Muonio, 1 pm (following the workshop)

The TaulavuoriFarm in Muonio is one of a kind. Members of the Taulavuori family introduce their native breed animals, that include a gelding horse, landrace bulls, Lappish cows, dogs, hens, and barely few weeks old ba lambs.

WHAT HAPPES IN THE TORNE RIVER VALLEY NATURE?

Rajamaa, Muonionalusta, 2 pm (Swedish time)

The panel discussion opens with presentations the director Johanna Ikävalko from the Arctic Centre at the Lapland University and the environment coordinator Jörgen Naalisvaara from the Norrbotten County Government. The discussion focuses on acute developments in the Torne River Valley nature as well as the public discourse regarding them in Finland and Sweden.

WED 3 JULY

TREES ARE PRAYERS & BENEATH THE OPEN SKY

Torne Valley Theater, Pajala, 6 pm (Swedish time)

Two touching works in the hands of a magnificent performer collective:

Trees are Prayers is a collage of music and nordic poetry created the dramatic actor Hannu-Pekka Björkman, saxophonist Jukka Perko, and zither artist Eva Väljaots.

A Väyläfestival commission from Jukka Perko Beneath the Open Sky fuses Nils-Aslak Valkeapää’s poetry and Perko’s bewitching music. Perko and percussion and electronics artist Mikko Hassinen perform the work. The artist Åsa Simma has recorded Valkeapää’s poems in their original language Northern Sami to be heard as part of the performance.
