Jaakko Heikkilä leads children and youth into the secrets of nature photographing at along the surges of the impressive Kukkola Rapids. Duration 2,5 hour.

Övertorneån Church, Övertorneå 6 pm (Swedish time)

Legendary organist Hans-Ola Ericsson performs a concert on Sweden’s oldest organ. The magnificent German baroque instrument was originally built into a church in Stockholm in the 17th Century but was moved to the newly built Övertorneå Church a century later. The program features gems from German organ repertoire from the baroque to the romantic, as well as works composed the famous organist himself. Duration 90 min. including an intermission.

Monica Tennberg, Research Professor at the University of Lapland Arctic Centre speaks about the state of the Bothnian Bay and offers an introduction into the research of multifaceted world politics. Duration 1 hour.

Duo Visa Haarala & Fabio de Oliveira, performing on flugelhorn and 14-stringed guitar take the audience on a journey through atmospheric melodies and catchy rhythms of Brazilian music from the early 20th Century to our days. Choro, baião, samba, frevo – virtuosic and embracing music with irresistible beat from all around Brazil. Duration appr. 70 min.

Poetry of Katri Vala and Nelly Sachs in a performance transforming the two ground-breaking poets’ thoughts into a dialogue between movement and sound. In the performance, perceptions of nature and sentiments of hope are weaved into a texture studying reality itself. Voice is given to mushrooms, fish, as well as the Fairy Godmothers carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Duration appr. 1 hour.

Organ virtuoso Ville Urponen performs in a concert with popular radio journalist Risto Nordell opening to the audience the intricate stories behind the music. Sotkamo Organ Factory completed the famous Ylitornio organ in 2010, an instrument renowned for its rich palette of timbres. The program journeys from baroque splendour through the romantic and into modern groove, demonstrating how the queen of instruments has at all times inspired the most visionary composers. Duration 90 min. including an intermission.

The concert features yoiks as well as Ingá-Máret’s new songs inspired the recent collaboration with guitarist-composer Lauri Marjakangas. The popular yoik-artist enjoys leading people into her artistic work, and the intimacy of the historic Alatalo house offers the audience a rare opportunity for conversation with both artists. Duo Kirsti Apajalahti, baroque violin & Giulio Quirici, theorbo brings historic musical greetings from continental Europe in a concert featuring early Italian baroque music performed on original instruments. Stylus fantasticus is a performance practice and musical style fusing strong harmonic foundation with free improvisation. The virtuoso musicians perform in the historic Jukkasjärvi Church which was built at the time when this music was originally created.

Duo Kirsti Apajalahti, baroque violin & Giulio Quirici, theorbo brings historic musical greetings from continental Europe int a concert featuring early Italian baroque music performed on original instruments. Stylus fantasticus is a performance practice and musical style fusing strong harmonic foundation with free improvisation. The virtuoso musicians perform in the Särkilax Church, which was rebuilt in 2018 based on original drawings. The original church was in use at the time when the concert’s music was created, but it was destroyed in the massive flooding of the Torne River in 1617.

Through his career lasting over four decades, photographer Jaakko Alatalo has been a witness to the transformation of life of both humans and nature in Lapland. His work as a photo-journalist and nature photographer is represented in the tripartite exhibit at the Väyläfestival.
